Interesting
A 2004 World Wealth Report compiled by brokerage firm Merrill Lynch & Co. found that one of every 125 Americans is a millionaire. That means Harford County has over 1,800 millionaires, if the local population profiles national statistics. It used to be bad form to die rich. If these guys ponied up just $1 million each, the county could have a world-class theater, opera house, symphony orchestra and hall, hospital complex, food kitchen, homeless shelter, Christian academy, Harford College, regional airport -- and still have $500 million left over to turn Havre de Grace into a world-class marina. Hmm.
Currently there is around $20 billion of housing value in the county. Payroll for employed adults is about $6 billion. Each segment contributes approximately the same in taxes annually to the county -- about $185 million. It would seem there is plenty of money to do the things that need doing here. Yet more than half of the county's income goes to the public school system, which many say performs badly. The county library system periodically seems to have difficulty keeping extended hours for patrons. It took 20 years to get Moores Mill Road, then the worst road in the county, repaved. And unless you are a paid up member, it costs $400 for an emergency ride to the hospital in a publicly financed ambulance. Hmm.
In a 2004 report, the U.S. Geological Survey said that about 408 billion gallons of water per day were withdrawn for all uses in the U.S. during 2000. That's around 1,450 gallons per person per day. In Harford County, that represents about 340 million gallons per day. The two largest users are thermoelectric power and irrigation. Since 1950, irrigation has accounted for about 65 percent of total water withdrawals. Public drinking water accounts for about 10 percent. What does all of this mean for Harford County? It would seem that as we fill up our farmland with houses, our need for water should drop. Hmm.
While we're on the subject of water, I have noticed over the years a disturbing phenomenon. As I rinse my series of drinking glasses using public water from the spigot and set them back in the same spot on the sink counter, after about three weeks a yellow circle forms from the run-off from the glasses. Is this chlorine residue? Is it yellow sand or clay particles suspended in the drinking water? The Harford County government web site indicates that extensive water testing goes on regularly for all kinds of chemicals. So maybe I am hallucinating. On the other hand, I have noticed over the years that shelf space has grown substantially for bottled drinking water in our grocery stores. Hmm.
Competition in business is a wonderful thing. It keeps prices down and product and service quality high. So we know, of course, that it was an anomaly, pure coincidence, that the week prior to Election Day 2005, the price of gasoline fell to its lowest range in several months: $1.99 - $2.05 per gallon; and the week after Election Day 2005, the price of gasoline started back up. At this writing, it's around $2.33 per gallon. Our guess is it will peak during the summer driving season, and that there will be two or three Middle East incidents to help it along. We're pretty sure these price increases have nothing to do with the merger of Shell and Texaco, two of the largest oil companies in the world. After all, the Justice Department said the merger was not anti-competitive. Hmm.
