bel air

The most beautiful town in the county

Coming into Bel Air on Churchville Road in the spring and early summer always stirs the soul.

    Featured Web Site
Bel Air Community Band web site
    Bel Air Community Band
This 70-piece band performs a variety of music throughout Harford County and neighboring states year around.

The thick almost blinding white blossoms of the trees and the centerline filled with multi-colored flowers as you drive up the hill into town is awesome. It is like it must have felt marching down the Champs-Elysee in Paris between the rows of cheering spectators on VE Day. Or like the bride must feel walking down the aisle between the wedding guests to meet the groom. It is without a doubt the greatest entrance into any town in the county.

Whether this is the job of the town's Parks department, or a shared responsibility among town, county and volunteers, it is a job superbly well done year after year.

To this great entrance can be added the wonderful redesign using bricks of the downtown sidewalks along Main and Bond Streets. Combined with the great Christmas decorations put up in December, downtown Bel Air is close to picture postcard perfection any time of the year.

And the inlaid brick crosswalks running down Route 1 only add to the charm of a town determined to remain attractive to both the citizens of the county and its frequent visitors.

Tribune Posts $101.6 million loss for first quarter 2002

Chicago (4/19/2002) --Tribune Co., which publishes the Chicago Tribune and The Los Angeles Times, which owns The Baltimore Sun, which owns The Aegis, Friday posted a first-quarter net loss of $101.6 million due to a charge associated with new accounting rules. The loss, equivalent to 36 cents a share, compared with net income of $70.6 million, or 21 cents a share, a year earlier. The latest results included an after-tax charge of $165.6 million related to the write-down of intangible assets associated with the Tribune's acquisition of Times Mirror Co. in 2000. Meanwhile, first-quarter revenue slipped 4.6% to $1.23 billion, from $1.29 billion a year earlier. Tribune, which also owns TV stations and the Chicago Cubs baseball team, said publishing revenue fell 5.8% to $932 million. Retail advertising revenue slipped 3%, as increases from food store and home furnishings ads helped mitigate declines in department store, health care, electronics and hardware advertising. (Source: BtoB) Solution: get rid of those Chicago Cubs! (So obvious.)

Finally, there are the cultural attractions that Bel Air makes available year round.

In the spring, there are competing arts festivals - the Bel Air Festival for the Arts, and the Harford Artists Association's ArtQuest - to showcase the fine local talents who draw and paint and otherwise create.

In the summer, there are nearly continuous band and concert performances free for the attending in Shamrock Park. And the Amoss Theater of Performing Arts on the campus of Harford Community College four miles east presents a broad mix of professional troupes of dancers, singers and thespians for your entertainment throughout the year. And poetry at Rockfield Manor every Tuesday; piano concerts and croquet tournaments at the Liriodendron; and the Equestrian Center with its annual Farm Fair.

All in all, a pretty good town in a pretty clean county with pretty neat people. Complemented by upwards of 17 churches for weekly spiritual nourishment, who could ask for anything more in this best of all possible towns in the summer of 2002?
