ALMOST ALWAYS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Anita C. Leight Estuary Center. Part of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and located at Otter Point Creek, this site was developed for research, technical workshops and conferences, cultural history presentations and seminars. Public programs include canoeing, nature hikes and children's activities. It is open to the public every Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm for visitors to browse the exhibits and hike the nature trails. Located at 700 Otter Point Road, Abingdon. Concord Point Lighthouse. One of the oldest lighthouses in continual use on the East Coast. Open on Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm during April to October. No charge for admission, but donations are accepted. Located at the foot of Lafayette Street in Havre de Grace. For more details, call 410-939-1498.
Conowingo Dam. One of the largest hydroelectric plants in the nation, the dam forms a freshwater lake 14 miles long. Saturday walk-in tours available from April through September at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 2:30 pm. Group tours of the plant are available with advanced reservations. Located on U.S. Route 1 in Darlington. For more details, call 410-457-5011.
Eden Mill Park and Nature Center. Located on approximately 60 acres bordering Deer Creek near Pylesville, this Harford County Parks and Recreation facility offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, canoeing and bird watching. The Nature Center is located in the historic mill and is available for guided tours. For more details, call 410-836-3050.
Gunpowder Falls State Park. Gunpowder Falls State Park features numerous scenic areas on 18,000 acres in the Gunpowder River Valley, which includes both Baltimore and Harford counties. The park has over 100 miles of trails, trout streams and the historic Village of Jerusalem, an 18th century grist mill company town. Other park areas include a multi-use rail trail, swimming beach, picnic areas, and a marina. Guided trips with local outfitters are available for flatware and moving water kayaking, canoeing, fly fishing for trout, bass fishing, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and natural history walks. Havre de Grace Decoy Museum. Located along the banks of the Susquehanna in downtown Havre de Grace, the Decoy Museum houses one of the finest collections of working decoys from the Chesapeake Bay and around the country. It is open to the public seven days a week from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. There is a fee. For more details, call 410-939-3739.
Ladew Topiary Gardens. The main attractions are self-guided tours of 15 seasonal flower gardens and topiary gardens on 22 acres, and guided historic Manor House tours. Open mid-April through October most days; Saturdays 10:30 am to 5:00 pm. There is a fee. There is also a gift shop, and the Ladew Cafe serving lunch daily. Located in Monkton. Mariner Point Park. Located in Joppatowne off Joppa Farm Road, this 38-acre waterfront park offers picnicking, pavilions, playgrounds, trails, fishing, piers, and boat launching ramps. Reservations are accepted by calling (410) 612-1606.
Ripken Stadium. Minor league baseball, as well as a variety of other events. It's best to check first. There is a fee. Saturdays during the winter from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Saturday during the summer from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Located on Gilbert Road in Aberdeen. For more details, call 410-297-9292.
Rocks State Park. This day-use park is located on Route 24 eight miles north of Bel Air, and is situated on 850 acres bordering Deer Creek. Rock climbing, picnicking, hiking, tubing, wading, canoeing, fishing, bow hunting (in season) and photography opportunities are available for your enjoyment. The 17-foot scenic free-falling waterfall is the second highest vertical falls in Maryland. For more details, call 410-557-7994.
Susquehanna Museum Of Havre De Grace. Restored 1836 lockhouse, canal lock, and swing bridge on the Susquehanna River. Period rooms and displays of Havre de Grace history. Open Saturdays 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, May through October. Open for group and individual tours all year. Located in downtown Havre de Grace. For tours and more details, call 410-939-5780.
Susquehanna State Park. The park offers excellent fishing opportunities, boating, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, bird watching, and picnicking. There is a playground for the children as well. The historic area features the Rock Run Grist Mill, built in 1794; the New Jersey Toll House; and the Archer Mansion. Located along the Susquehanna River three miles northwest of Havre de Grace off Route 155. For more details, call 410-557-7994.
