Amateur Radio is Alive and Well in Harford County
The Harford County Emergency Communications (EmComm) group is comprised of volunteer licensed amateur (ham) radio operators who have expresssed an interest in providing communications service primarily to public safety organizations. As training toward the real thing, they support charitable organizations in activities such as walkathons, races, and similar events.
One of the primary missions of ham radio is public service - providing communications support in times of disaster. Hams have been responsible for saving countless thousands of lives during emergencies when traditional means of communication may be overloaded or nonfunctional. While this group primarily is tasked with service to Harford County citizens, they coordinate with other Maryland counties, appropriate state agencies and, ultimately, Federal organizations as well.
To join, simply sign up at the Yahoo group HarfordEmComm, or join the regular weekly radio net each Tuesday evening at 7:30 pm on the 146.775 repeater.
Centered in Harford County, NEMARC is an organization of amateur radio operators who come together to share an enthusiasm for and enjoyment of their hobby, and to open the pathways of communication via "on the air" nets and an e-mail reflector for discussion of many aspects of amateur radio and related interests such as weather stations and contesting. Membership is just a matter of subscribing to their reflector by sending an e-mail to NEMARC-subscribe@yahoogroups.com, then joining them on 146.595 simplex at 7:00 pm on Friday evenings. You can also contact the North East Maryland Amateur Radio Club (NEMARC) directly via Scott at snkdavis@aol.com.
